New studies: MA in Security and Development

New studies: MA in Security and Development

The Jagiellonian University launches the first edition of MA programme of studies on international security and development. 24 students enrolled in 2018/2019 will study for free thanks to the grant of the National Centre for Research and Development.

The international discussion on the most troubling global problems of the modern world, such as the war in Syria, difficult situation in Ukraine, the European migrant crisis as well as the threat of terrorist attacks shows a huge demand for specialists and strategists in the field of security and development. It also indicates the necessity to raise public awareness of the correlation between the aid transferred to developing countries and the sense of security among developed countries' societies.

In order to respond to these two trends, the Jagiellonian University launches the first edition of an MA programme of studies – International Security and Development. ISAD aims at fostering creative thinking about complex problems of global security and development, as well as equipping students with analytical tools, language expertise, and cross-cultural understanding. It also helps gain professional skills needed for managing global security and development in an international environment.

‘Our goal is to educate specialists who understand the importance of problems of the modern world and seeking solutions for them. We want to educate strategists able to implement actions that ensure appropriate targeting of aid projects, leading to greater stability in international relations’, emphasises Marcin Grabowski, the director of ISAD studies.

The two-year Master's programme will be run by both international experts and lectures from the Jagiellonian University. Academic courses will be taught in English, and students will learn a second foreign language of their choice. There are two academic tracks (specialisations): international security and crisis management as well as development and security. The programme will include professional traineeships and workshops with experts.

Twenty-four students on the top of recruitment list in the academic year 2018/2019 will receive scholarships covering the cost of the entire tuition fee for the whole two years of the programme. Additionally, fifteen foreign students will receive a monthly scholarship (around 350 EUR) in order to cover the costs of living in Kraków.

The first ISAD class will be launched in the academic year 2018/2019, and the recruitment process is already underway.
