Relationships between the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków and the Jagiellonian University

Data: 10.05.2018 - 03.08.2018
Miejsce: JU Museum Collegium Maius, ul. Jagiellońska 15
Relationships between the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków and the Jagiellonian University

The exhibition presents the history of the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, from its origins dating back to the 18th century, to the opening of the School of Fine Arts at the current Jan Matejko square in Kraków, as well as the historical and current relationships between the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków and the Jagiellonian University.

The Academy of Fine arts was officially established on 16 October 1818 at the JU Faculty of Philosophy. In 1833 it was separated from the Jagiellonian University and, as the School of Drawing and Painting, became part of the Technical Institute. The independent School of Fine Arts was created 40 years later. It was initially headed by Jan Matejko, one of the most famous Polish painters.

The history of the Academy of Fine Arts and its relationships with the Jagiellonian University will be illustrated by portraits of JU professors and works of graphic art donated to the Jagiellonian University by contemporary Kraków artists. The exhibits will include works by Wojciech K. Stattler, Jan Matejko, Stanisław Wyspiański, Jacek Malczewski, Stanisław I. Witkiewicz, Leon Chwistek, Olga Boznańska and Leon Wyczółkowski.

The exhibition also features graduation works by students from the Faculty of Conservation and Restoration of Works of Art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków related to the items from the JU Museum.

The exhibited items will be accompanied by archival documents from the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków.
