For the last 8 years, researchers from the Jagiellonian University Institute of Archaeology have been delving deep into the history of Nea Pafos, an ancient city located in Cyprus. During the last year’s excavation season, they have discovered that it was much larger than it was previously thought.

Foundation for Polish Science fellowship for JU computer scientist

Prof. Maciej Ogorzałek from the JU Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Science is one of the two winners of the Foundation for Polish Science sabbatical fellowship. It will allow him to spend six months at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, where he will work on a research project entitled ‘Gaudi chips’ – Innovative design concepts for 3D integrated nano-electronic systems.

Jagiellonian University ranked best in Poland by URAP

The Jagiellonian University took first place among 50 Polish higher education institutions listed in the University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP) 2018/2019 by the Middle East Technical University in Ankara. The oldest university in Poland was ranked 307th in the world, which marks a rise of 16 places from 2017/2018. Once again, the list was topped by Harvard University.

JU scientists to develop biological agricultural support solutions

The project “Interactions between plants and microorganisms in response to the presence of potentially toxic metals, metalloids and silicon (Si)” by Prof. Katarzyna Turnau from the JU Faculty of Biology won a grant from the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange. The study aimed at replacing the widespread use of agrochemicals with biological agricultural support solutions will also involve researchers from Slovakia and Austria.

A unique steam bath carved in rock was discovered by Jagiellonian University researchers conducting excavations in the ancient Mayan city of Nakum in Guatemala. The more than 2,500-year-old structure could have also been the site of religious rituals.

We intuitively know that sleep is important for our health and wellbeing. Probably all of us have experienced the negative consequences of its shortage, such as impaired concentration, slower reaction times or inability to engage in more strenuous activities. It’s estimated that over a quarter of Poles suffer from a chronic shortage of sleep. It has also turned out that sleep deficiency has a negative impact on the periods of rest.
