With a 650-year-old tradition, more than 80 fields of study, about 48 thousand students and nearly 4 thousand academic teachers, the Jagiellonian University is one of the leading higher education centers in Central Europe.

Tradition

The history of the Jagiellonian University dates back to 1364, when its foundation by King Casimir the Great gave birth to higher education in Poland. A number of famous people, including Nicolaus Copernicus and Pope John Paul II, have been students of this institution. The heart of the university is located in the very centre of the historic city of Kraków, the former capital of Poland.

Courses offered

The Jagiellonian University's offer for prospective students includes over 140 undergraduate (first-cycle) programmes of study and about 170 graduate (second-cycle) programmes. Among them there are part-time and full-time courses in 84 fields of study and 159 specialities. The third-cycle studies offer includes nearly 30 PhD programmes. Besides, the Jagiellonian University faculties offer several dozen non-degree post-diploma courses. The full list of study programmes available in a given academic year is available on the Online Application System website. For specially talented students whose interests embrace a wide range of subjects, the JU offers special interdisciplinary studies in humanities and in mathematics and natural sciences.

Teaching staff

The academic staff of the Jagiellonian University consists of over 700 professors, and more than 3000 other scholars. They share their knowledge and experience with students not only during lectures, classes and seminars, but also within the framework of research projects in which students can take active part. The JU lecturers include leading authorities in their respective fields, who exert a major influence on contemporary science and culture.

Admissions system

The Online Application System, created specially for the Jagiellonian University, provides candidates with a complex and user-friendly way of going through the admissions process. The websites www.rekrutacja.uj.edu.pl and www.erk.uj.edu.pl (available in both Polish and English) keep them informed about the details concerning the currently available courses and the admissions procedure.

Scholarships

The Jagiellonian University offers various scholarships, within the framework of which students can receive various forms of financial assistance. They include a special scholarship for the best students, which can also be awarded to first year students who are Olympiad winners, as well as scholarships and fellowships granted to students and academics from Central and Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union states, and Balkan countries.

International collaboration

The students can take advantage of multiple opportunities created by the Jagiellonian University's international cooperation, including foreign exchange programmes (especially Erasmus+), scholarship and internship schemes, as well as international training courses, conferences and other academic events.

Personal development

The Jagiellonian University offers its students a wide variety of extracurricular activities, including membership in musical ensembles, an academic theatre, and sports associations. The university is also home to about 150 student societies, where young researchers pursue their academic interests and develop friendships with people who share their passion.

Career opportunities

According to the research conducted by the JU Careers Service, a majority of Jagiellonian University alumni find employment no later than three months after graduation. Nearly 83% of students are satisfied with the curriculum of their study programme. The JU Careers Service also provides students with career consultancy, training courses, and information pertaining to the broadly understood job market and professional development. Besides, students of many JU units have an opportunity to participate in internships and work placement at prestigious Polish and international companies.
