JU scholars to conduct research at prestigious foreign universities

The Polish National Agency for Academic exchange has announced the award of scholarships within the framework of the Bekker Programme. The scheme will enable 13 scholars from the Jagiellonian University to carry out their research projects at prestigious academic centres in the United States, Australia, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Spain, and Italy.

JU scientists to work on a catalytic converter for diesel engines

The development of an effective structural catalytic converter to reduce the amount of nitrogen oxides in fumes emitted by diesel engines and remove soot particles from them will be the goal of a joint effort of Polish and Chinese researchers. The project, headed by Prof. Zbigniew Sojka from the Jagiellonian University Faculty of Chemistry, will be run within the framework of the first bilateral grant competition organised by the National Research and Development Centre (Poland) and the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China.

JU astronomers among creators of a new sky map

An international team of more than 200 astronomers from 18 countries has published the first phase of a major new radio sky survey at unprecedented sensitivity using the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) telescope. The survey reveals hundreds of thousands of previously undetected galaxies, shedding new light on many research areas including the physics of black holes and how clusters of galaxies evolve.

JU biologist receives the MSCA fellowship

Dr Fedrica Zacchini from the JU Małopolska Centre of Biotechnology has been awarded with the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions fellowship within the Horizon 2020 EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation. Over next two years, she will by studying neurodevelopmental outcomes in offspring conceived by parents at advanced age, collaborating with two groups led by Dr. Alan Chan (University of Leiden) and Prof. Grażyna Ptak (Jagiellonian University).

Unraveling the molecular mysteries of neurodegenerative diseases

An International team of researchers based at the Malopolska Centre of Biotechnology (MCB) from the Jagiellonian University has cracked the atomic structure of an important cellular 'bodyguard'. The Elp3 protein helps to properly produce all other cellular proteins and thereby protects us from neurodegenerative diseases. The results of their research were published this week in Nature Communications.
