JU Rector visits Chinese institutions of higher education

From 9 to 13 December 2017 the Jagiellonian University delegation led by the Rector Prof. Wojciech Nowak paid a visit to China. The delegation also included the Rector’s Proxy for Internationalisation and Head of the JU Institute of the Middle and Far East Prof. Adam Jelonek, Dean of the JU Faculty of International and Political Studies Prof. Zdzisław Mach, Director of the Confucius Institute in Kraków Dr Joanna Wardęga, and Dr Małgorzata Osińska.

On 9 December, Prof. Wojciech Nowak, Prof. Adam Jelonek and Prof. Zdzisław Mach participated in the annual meeting of the Programme Board of Confucius Institute in Kraków at the Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU), together with The Chinese members of the Board: the BFSU Vice-President Prof. Yan Guohua, the Dean of BFSU Faculty of European Languages and Cultures Prof. Zhao Gang, and the Director of BFSU Office of Confucius Institutes Prof. Zhang Xiaohui. The Council positively assessed the current year, as well as the plans for the next year. It has also accepted the resignation of the incumbent Director of the Confucius Institute in Kraków Dr Joanna Wardęga and Dr Małgorzata Osińska’s candidacy to succeed her.

On 10 December, Prof. Wojciech Nowak and the President of BFSU Prof. Peng Long signed a letter of intent aimed at launching a joint double degree MA programme in Central-Eastern European Studies run by the JU Faculty of International and European Studies and the BFSU Faculty of European Languages and Cultures.

Beijing Foreign Studies University has been the first Chinese higher education institution to offer courses in foreign language studies. In the 1950s it launched the first Polish Studies programme in China. Today, besides linguistic courses, the university also offers programmes in such fields as Management, Business, Law, Trade, and International Relations. The BFSU is a partner of the JU Centre for Chinese Language and Culture the Confucius Institute in Kraków, the JU School of Polish Language and Culture, and the JU Institute of the Middle and Far East.

After the visit at BFSU, the JU delegation attended an international conference of Confucius Institutes in the city of Xi’an, famous for its terracotta army. On December 12, Prof. Wojciech Nowak participated in the meeting of advisory board of Confucius Institutes, led by the Chinese Deputy Prime Minister Liu Yandong. The board consists of presidents of over a dozen universities from all over the world, including the University of Groningen, Freie Unversität Berlin, Keimyung University, Moscow State Linguistic Russia University, and the University of Cape Town.

Currently there are 550 Confucius Institutes all over the world, including five in Poland (at the Jagiellonian University, the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, the University of Wrocław, Opole University of Technology, and the University of Gdańsk).
