Eminent physician and scientist awarded with JU honorary doctorate

On 27 November 2017 Professor Hans-Rudolf Tinneberg from Justus Liebig University Giessen was conferred the honorary doctorate of the Jagiellonian University. The degree recipient is an internationally recognised medical researcher, whose main fields of study are obstetrics and gynaecology. Since more than a dozen years he has been collaborating with the Chair in Gynaecology and Obstetrics of the Jagiellonian University Medical College.

During the conferment ceremony, the JU Rector Prof. Wojciech Nowak listed some of Prof. Tinneberg’s achievements for which the scientist was honoured with the most important of the titles awarded by the Jagiellonian University. He referred to his research on early pregnancy diagnostics, development of an original concept of how endometriosis develops and explanation of mechanisms behind the implementation of endometrial cells as well as the establishment of classification of deeply infiltrating endometriosis. The JU Rector also pointed to Prof. Tinnenberg’s outstanding services to Polish gynaecology by making Kraków research centre part of international group carrying out studies into the influence of environment on human procreation, promoting collaborative research results, and contribution to the establishment of the School of Endoscopy, which provides education to Polish gynecologists and obstetricians.

The career and achievements of Prof. Hans-Rudolf Tinneberg were presented by Prof. Kazimierz Pityński, who stressed the importance of long-standing cooperation between the honorary doctorate recipient and the JU Chair in Gynaecology and Obstetrics, headed by Prof. Pityński himself, and especially the achievements in research on the influence of environmental pollution on reproductive system, which made the Chair part of international network of toxicological research.

Prof. Hans-Rudolf Tinneberg trained JU Medical College staff in surgical laparoscopic techniques, used, for example, in cervical and endometrial cancer treatment. Thanks to his efforts, the School of Endoscopy established at the JU Chair in Gynaecology and Obstetrics was supplied with highest quality endoscopic equipment. Besides, several JU specialists underwent training in the field of breast cancer and endometriosis in Prof. Tinneberg’s clinic, which also facilitated their participation in specialised courses in Giessen, Zurich and Geneva.

Prof. Tinneberg was born in 1950 in Kiel. He graduated in Medicine from the University of Kiel in 1975. In 1978, he obtained a PhD degree. In 1995 he became professor at Bielefeld-Rosenhöhe Hospital, where he had earlier become the head of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department. His research achievements are related to three major areas: endometriosis, reproductive medicine, and endoscopic surgery. Collaborating with Prof. Kurt Semm, often considered the father of gynaecological endoscopy, and Prof. Liselotte Mettler, he greatly contributed to the development of this discipline. He designed new research equipment, for which he received a European patent. His notable scientific achievements also include a series of papers on detecting and describing the early pregnancy factor as well as the impact of environmental pollution on reproduction.

Prof. Tinneberg has authored nearly 200 research papers, most of which are original and experimental publications in prestigious journals, which are frequently cited by other authors. He also has immense experience in training young professionals and researchers. He is member of numerous scientific associations and editorial boards. In 2009 he became an honorary member of the Polish Gynaecological Society. He currently heads the Clinic of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen.
