Jagiellonian University strengthens its ties with the largest Mexican higher education institution

On 2 October 2017 in the Collegium Novum Senate Room, a cooperation agreement was signed between the Jagiellonian University and Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM).

The Jagiellonian University was represented by Prof. Wojciech Nowak, JU Rector, Prof. Armen Edigarian, JU Vice-Rector for Educational Affairs, and Prof. Adam Jelonek, Rector’s Proxy for Internationalisation. The delegation consisted of the Ambassador of Mexico to Poland Alejandro Négrin and UNAM Coordinador de Relaciones y Asuntos Internacionales Dr. Francisco Trigo Tavera.

Prof. Nowak signed the Memorandum of Understanding, previously signed by the Rector of Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, a document providing a general outline of the cooperation. Next, Prof. Edigarian and Dr. Trigo Tavera signed the more specific Agreement on Students Exchange.

After signing the agreements, the participants of the meeting discussed the details of the future collaboration. It will begin in the academic year 2018/2019 with at least two JU students travelling to UNAM. They will be selected in an open competition, allowing the university to choose the best candidates as its ambassadors. The Jagiellonian University will also admit students from Mexico. Both universities will also exchange its academic staff and work towards double diploma study programmes in the area of American and Latin American Studies.

Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México is the oldest North American university and the largest university in Latin America.
