New 3rd cycle studies in English at the JU Faculty of Biology and Earth Sciences

New 3rd cycle studies in English at the JU Faculty of Biology and Earth Sciences

The JU Faculty of Biology and Earth Sciences is launching the PhD Programme in Biology.

What is new and unique about the programme is that it will be taught entirely in English and the candidates will be recruited to specific research topics proposed by their prospective thesis advisors. The theses subjects are available at this link. Each candidate can choose three topics and rank them in the order of preference. The admissions will start in middle August, and interviews for selected candidates will be held on 18 September 2017. The choice of candidates will also depend on their previous achievements. Optionally, the PhD students’ research work might be additionally overviewed by an advisory team appointed by their academic supervisor/thesis advisor.

Within the framework of the programme, two PhD students will be admitted to the JU Institute of Botany in the academic year 2017/2018, whereas the Institute of Environmental Studies and the Institute of Zoology and Biomedical Research will admit four students each. The study programme leads to a doctoral degree in the discipline of Biology or Ecology. The flexible course of study allows the PhD students to adapt their participation in classes to an individual research plan. Besides classes in biological subjects, the curriculum includes such courses as: Philosophy of Science with Elements of Logic, Efficient Teaching, English for Environmental Sciences, Advanced Research Communication, and Scientific Career Development.

“We have just obtained funding from the PO WER programme for the first group of PhD students, who will be admitted in October”, said Dr hab. Joanna Rutkowska, the programme coordinator. The funds will enable visits by foreign researchers and the doctoral students’ participation in international training courses and research internships. The students will also receive a scholarship worth 2 thousand zlotys per month. Besides, half of the students will get an additional PhD scholarship from their institutes. There will also be an opportunity to obtain grant-funded scholarships.
