JU hosts a visit from the University of Trier

JU hosts a visit from the University of Trier

On 15 May 2017 the Jagiellonian University was visited by a delegation from the University of Trier., including the President Prof. Michael Jäckel, Prof. Alexander Bierich from the Department of Slavic Studies, who coordinates cooperation with the JU, and the head of the International Office Birgit Roser.

The delegation was received in Collegium Novum by the JU Rector Prof. Wojciech Nowak and the JU Vice-Rector for University Development Prof. Dorota Malec, with whom they discussed the prospects of collaboration between the University of Trier and the JU. Other issues discussed at the meeting included the history of both universities and the current trends in higher education and international academic collaboration.

During the two-day stay in Kraków, representatives of the German university also visited the Jagiellonian Library, the JU Museum Collegium Maius, and selected JU Faculties. They also took part in a meeting with Prof. Piotr Laidler from the JU Internationalisation Committee.

The aim of the visit from the University of Trier is to learn more about the Jagiellonian University and explore the prospects of cooperation with selected JU units. An agreement between the two higher education institutions was signed on 5 March 2017. It envisages staff exchange and other forms of cooperation between the University of Trier and three JU faculties: of International and Political Studies, of Law and Administration, and of Polish Studies.

The University of Trier was founded in 1473. In 1970 it was re-established after being closed down by Napoleon’s administration in 1798. It currently has 14 thousand students, most of whom study humanities and social sciences.
