European distinction for the University Hospital in Kraków

European distinction for the University Hospital in Kraków

Following an independent audit, the healthcare institution was recognised as a key partner of the European Reference Network (ERN) in the field of neurological and metabolic diseases treatment. Besides, the Clinical Department of Allergy and Immunology of the University Hospital obtained the associate partner status in the network "Rare-complex autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases".

The mission of the ERN is to combine professional knowledge and experience of a number of specialised medical centres from 28 European Union member states in order to improve access to the diagnosis and treatment of patients suffering from rare diseases or other particularly complicated clinical conditions. These healthcare units should play the role of knowledge hubs in the field of medical education and research.

Key partnership in a given reference network means that the healthcare unit is a definite leader in a given discipline and has the widest knowledge in this field and the higher number of diagnosed and treated cases at a national scale. A key partner receives a wide range of opportunities to exchange experience at the European level and receives access to an online consulting and communication system, which is planned to be launched in June 2017.

Medical units participating in the networks will be able to compare their treatment outcomes with the best centres and use jointly established quality indicators. Besides, they will take part in working out treatment guidelines and standards as well as in clinical registers management.

To join the ERN, each candidate must meet specific conditions, including compliance with certain procedures, respecting patients’ rights as well as having a certain number of patients in a given field. It is also important to present evidence of good clinical care and positive treatment outcomes.

The University Hospital in Kraków has already been a key partner in the European Reference Networks in two other areas: treatment of neurological diseases (ERN-RDN) and metabolic diseases (MetabERN). The hospital’s Department of Neurology and the Department of Metabolic Diseases both have longtime experience in treating the most difficult cases in Poland. The disorders diagnosed and treated at these units include the Guillain–Barré syndrome, the CADASIL syndrome, and the Gaucher's disease. In order to provide patients with complex care, the hospital has established multidisciplinary specialist teams which hold regular case conferences. The hospital departments provide both outpatient and inpatient care. as well as treatment within the framework of therapeutic and medication programmes that are financed from public funds.
