Slav and Arab World. Mutual Relations: Literature - Language - History

The Chair in Arabic Studies at the JU Institute of Oriental Studies is hosting the international conference Slav and Arab World. Mutual Relations: Literature - Language – History, aimed at presenting result of the latest research on the relations between the Slavic and the Arab world in the field of literature, culture, history and language.

2016 marked the 1050th anniversary of the Baptism of Poland. The oldest source on the early Polish statehood was written in Arabic by the Andalusian Jew Ibrahim ibn Yaqub. During the centuries that followed, Poland and the world of Islam were linked and divided by a multitude of events and phenomena of military, cultural and academic nature. The awareness of these relations gave rise to a number of questions about the relationship between Slavdom and the -apparently distant - Arab world.

The organisers welcome contributions from scholars who study Arab sources on the history of Slavs and investigate the mutual influences and relations between the Slavic and the Arab world in both contemporary and historical perspective. The languages of the conference are English, Polish and Arabic.

The conference fee is 100Є, which covers conference materials, publication of conference proceedings, organisation costs, and refreshments between the sessions.
