JU researchers unveil the mysteries of a medieval stronghold

For three years archaeologists from Kraków have been carrying out excavations in Grodzisko hamlet near the town of Skała in Małopolska region. Their research aims to provide a definite answer to the question what was located in this place in the 13th century. According two the two competing hypotheses, it was either a fortified Poor Clares’ convent or a castle built by the Silesian Duke Henry the Bearded.

JU research on protein crystallisation featured in BBC Arabic

The BBC television news channel broadcast to the Arab World aired a report about research on artificial protein carried out by the Crystallography Research Group of the Jagiellonian University Małopolska Centre of Biotechnology. The project, directed by Dr hab. Grzegorz Dubin is aimed at gaining a better understanding of the structure of protein and their functioning in the human body.

JU Rector meets with visiting professors

On 10 December, JU Rector Prof. Wojciech Nowak met with a group of researchers coming from various foreign universities to assume the position of visiting professors at the Jagiellonian University. It is the third in a series of meetings organised within the framework of a new programme established by the JU Rector to increase the number of international staff. Aside from the Rector, the Jagiellonian University was represented by Prof. Adam Jelonek and Prof. Piotr Laidler.

On 25 October 2018, the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education has officially announced its decision to fund a unique cryogenic electron microscope (Cryo-EM) and establish the National Centre for Cryogenic Electron Microscopy at the JU National Synchrotron Radiation Centre SOLARIS. It’s a direct result of lengthy organisational work and unwavering support of 17 research institutions, including the Jagiellonian University, which have urged the Ministry to fund such an endeavour.
