Attempting to overcome stereotypes about the Romani people and comparing European music festivals as public spaces affording encounters with diversities – these are the subjects of JU projects awarded by the Humanities in the European Research Area network. The winning projects are led by Dr hab. Anna Piotrowska and Dr Karolina Golemo.

JU biologist receives the MSCA fellowship

Dr Fedrica Zacchini from the JU Małopolska Centre of Biotechnology has been awarded with the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions fellowship within the Horizon 2020 EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation. Over next two years, she will by studying neurodevelopmental outcomes in offspring conceived by parents at advanced age, collaborating with two groups led by Dr. Alan Chan (University of Leiden) and Prof. Grażyna Ptak (Jagiellonian University).

Unraveling the molecular mysteries of neurodegenerative diseases

An International team of researchers based at the Malopolska Centre of Biotechnology (MCB) from the Jagiellonian University has cracked the atomic structure of an important cellular 'bodyguard'. The Elp3 protein helps to properly produce all other cellular proteins and thereby protects us from neurodegenerative diseases. The results of their research were published this week in Nature Communications.

I Chair in General Surgery of the Jagiellonian University Medical College is the only Polish clinic to be included in an international group of prestigious surgery clinics working together within the framework of the Innovations in Surgery project. Initiated by the American Cleveland Clinic, the project entails systematic exchange of knowledge and experience through a variety of means, such as monthly video conferences.

SOLARIS synchrotron to join the BEATS project

The National Synchrotron Radiation Centre SOLARIS will join the European Horizon 2020 project BEAmline for Tomography at SESAME (BEATS), which was launched with the objective to design, procure, construct and commission a beamline for hard X-ray full-field tomography at the SESAME synchrotron in Jordan. The grant is worth 6 million euros and will span a four-year period from beginning 2019 to end 2022.

The popular science book Paphos - Mystery of the City of Aphrodite. Archaeological heritage versus new technologies has been published by the Archaeologica foundation. The book is a result of archaeological research carried out on Cyprus by the Paphos Agora Project team from the Department of Classical Archeology at the JU Institute of Archaeology. The work is a perfect introduction to the world of modern archaeology.

JU microbiologists co-author an article in Science Advances

The Science Advances journal published a paper about the role of Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria in Alzheimer’s disease and the possibility of using gingipain inhibitors in the treatment of this neurodegenerative illness. The authors of the article include researchers from the Department of Microbiology at the JU of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology and from the JU Małopolska Centre of Biotechnology.
