Universities of the future. International conference at the JU

On 20 September, an international conference entitled Management and governance of the university of the future. Research on competitiveness, globalisation and development has begun at the JU Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Science. The conference was organised by the JU Institute of Public Affairs.

The two day meeting attended by representatives of Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education, Conference of Rectors of Academic Schools in Poland, Polish Rectors Foundation, Réseau Pays du Groupe Vysegrad International Research Network as well as rectors of many Polish universities was co-organised along with the 24th PGV Network Conference and 12th Intercultural Management Conference.

The conference was officially opened by JU Vice-Rector for University Development Prof. Dorota Malec. She stressed that the conference takes place in exceptional circumstances, since the discussion about the future of universities coincides with the introduction of new laws regulating higher education in Poland. She expressed her hope that the debate will bring answers to many important questions regarding universities’ role in the modern world.

The conference featured an opening lecture The Anomalous Governance of Scholarship by Prof. Hugh Willmott (Cass Business School, University of London). Next, Prof. Claude Martin, honorary president of PGC, delivered an introductory speech, in which he stated that in the future, universities will have to adapt to social changes, becoming more open to a variety of cultures and preparing students for working in the global environment.
