JU Institute of Psychology launches an innovative PhD programme

JU Institute of Psychology launches an innovative PhD programme

The international PhD programme CogNeS, combining social studies with neuroscience, will start at the Jagiellonian University Institute of Psychology. It will be the first such doctoral course in this part of Europe.

CogNeS is an innovative study programme, unique for its interdisciplinary and international character. It aims at preparing PhD candidates to run their own research at the intersection of psychology, cognitive studies and neuroscience with the use of latest methods and technologies, such as neuroimaging or TMS.

Researchers from the Jagiellonian University Institute of Psychology believe that the rapid technological progress and increase in knowledge require breaching the boundaries of narrow specialisations and openness to methods used in various disciplines. Hence, the institute will run the programme in collaboration with the JU Medical College, the Małopolska Centre of Biotechnology and the Department of Cognitive Science of the JU Institute of Philosophy, which will enable the transfer of knowledge from different areas of broadly understood brain studies.

“We put strong emphasis on cooperation, since research is a collaborative endeavour. The curriculum has been designed in a way which promotes reaching beyond the boundaries of traditional disciplines,” says Dr hab. Michał Wierzchoń, coordinator of the programme, head of the JU Institute of Psychology.

CogNeS, whose goal is to develop competence in social sciences and neuroscience, has been based on a model of teamwork combined with individual tutoring.

The project not only enables the participation of PhD students in lectures and classes taught by foreigners, including visiting professors, but also gives them the opportunity to participate in international research projects, as well as foreign research internships, summer schools and international conferences.

All persons who have been admitted to the programme will receive a scholarship as well as additional funds for trips abroad.

The CogNeS programme has been funded by the National Centre for Research and Development as well as the European Funds. For more information, visit the website: cognes.psychologia.uj.edu.pl.
