A multimillion Euro construction project at JU Medical College

A multimillion Euro construction project at JU Medical College

A building located at ul. Medyczna 7 in Kraków will be converted into a modern educational complex with medical simulation rooms and a state-of-the-art library. The facility will become part of the Innovative Medical Education Centre of the Jagiellonian University Medical College. The construction is planned to be completed in the second half of 2018.

Advanced patient simulators, supply columns, defibrillators, electrocardiographs, respirators, ultrasound scanners, and infusion pumps are only some examples of the equipment installed in the new training and simulation rooms of the JU MC Innovative Medical Education Centre, which currently consists of the facilities of Nursing Theory and Basic Obstetrics Training units as well as the Department of Medical Didactics.

“The creation of the centre is aimed at providing students with as favourable studying conditions as possible. Some medical procedures learnt during classes are either very invasive or very risky and cannot be trained on real patients. Such centres make it possible to faithfully simulate the conditions that exist at hospital emergency wards or intensive therapy units. Hence they allow education in an environment almost identical to what the students will experience during their future work”, says Dr Michał Nowakowski, head of the Department of Medical Didactics, responsible for the implementation of the project.

The implementation of development programmes at higher education institutions, including the establishment of medical simulation centres, is one of the most important goals of EU programmes in the area of healthcare.

“Today, training using medical simulation is the preferred teaching method at medical courses all over the world. Such an innovative educational centre gives us opportunities to make our students even better prepared for their future job. Despite the high construction cost, we must take that chance”, explains Prof. Tomasz Grodzicki, the Jagiellonian University Vice-Rector for the Medical College.

The construction is carried out by the consortium of companies Corposa Polska and Construcciones Y Promociones Coprosa. The total cost is almost 50 million PLN (12 million EUR).
