18th Kraków Science and Art Festival

Date: 17.05.2018 - 19.05.2018
18th Kraków Science and Art Festival

Presentations of state-of-the-art technology, chess tournaments, music concerts, lectures about the unlimited capabilities of the human mind – these are just a few of the attractions of this year’s Science and Art Festival.

“The power of reason” will be the watchword of this year’s science communication and artistic events. In this way the organisers aim to highlight not only the scientific progress, but also the great responsibility born by those who change the world with new technologies.

On May 17-19 a large part of the Main Market Square in Kraków will turn into a science fair, where science enthusiasts of any age will be able to see and experience what typically happens in labs and lecture rooms, guided by academics from universities and institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The researchers will present achievements, secrets and challenges of their own disciplines. They will show practical benefits resulting from scientific progress and innovation and their impact on the quality of everyday life.

The form of science communication will be adapted to the age and individual interests of the participants. The programme will comprise workshops and meetings for children and teenagers, as well as events for adults, including seniors. Besides lectures and talks, the festival will feature spectacular experiments, performances by actors and musicians, as well as prize competitions. A new feature of this year’s festival will be a simultaneous chess tournament involving a chess master and a group of volunteers.

Art universities will be responsible for the artistic programme of the festival, which will begin with a performance by students of the Stanisław Wyspianski Academy of Theatre Arts in Kraków and conclude with a concert of the Academy of Music in Kraków

The Kraków Science and Art Festival, organised since 2000, is the largest event promoting science and art in the Małopolska region.

This year’s festival commemorates Prof. Antoni Kempiński, an eminent Polish psychiatrist, whose scholarly achievements have shown the immense potential of the human intellect.
